Last summer, I had the opportunity to attend a conference. In terms of my normal professional career, this statement is not particularly significant, however, this conference was different because it wasn’t actually for me. My wife, who is a stay-at-home-mom, decided to sign up to be a retailer for a direct sales company.
As many of you know, this is generally a red flag of seismic proportions. This company happened to have their annual conference coming up soon and she decided to attend. It was in California — a state that is very easy to justify a visit to. My role in this whole trip was to be the chauffeur and then head off to a nice coffee shop to read a book. There was one exception: I was invited to a special spouse’s event. Essentially, this was an opportunity to hear directly from the company’s owner so they could make sure they were spreading their direct sales magic to both sides of the household. The event allowed me access to the conference facility, which may or may not have been temporary, and as a seasoned conference-goer, I knew that once I was in, I was in for the duration of the event.
The company brought in some heavy-duty speakers. I heard one of them had a great Ted Talk, so I decided that I should take the opportunity to attend that session while I was in the building. The speaker was Simon Sinek. And let me tell you: He did not disappoint.
Simon is a famous speaker who tours the world encouraging others to start approaching life with the “Why.” According to Simon, there is a big difference between the average company and the one that leads in their market. Companies that lead, Simon said, start with the “Why.”

In terms of education, your “why” could be the reason you started or went back to complete your degree, or your purpose for getting an education in the first place.
