Summer is your time to shine!
At Johnson & Wales University College of Online Education, we know that finding the motivation to stay in school over the summer can be tricky—but don’t worry! We’re here to help keep you focused with your nose to the grindstone. Just think: when you’re finished with your degree, it will all be worth it.
Until then, here are four ways to stay on track with your degree during the sometimes-distracting summer months.
1. Find somewhere relaxing to work.
The beauty of online education is that you can study from anywhere! Bring your laptop outside and find a quiet area, or open the windows and let the breeze guide you through your course. According to a journal published by the Public Library of Science, “there is a real, measurable cognitive advantage” to spending time outdoors. If you study outside, not only will you get to enjoy the summer weather but your brain will get some much needed rejuvenation.
2. Stay on top of your assignments.
Make a habit early on to keep up with all of your coursework. If you’re going to school, working, or juggling family life—or all three—this is so important! Plus, looming deadlines and the stress they cause can be bad for your health, experts say. So if you get things done early, it will have a positive impact on your health and it will allow you to say “yes” when someone asks you to go to the beach or hang out by the fire.
3. Schedule breaks and fun activities.
Again, you want to be able to do the things you like AND go to school. It shouldn’t be one or the other. According to an article in Psychology Today, taking breaks helps to restore your motivation and can increase productivity. So take the time to plan some activities you like to do—it’ll help you stay energized and fresh in your courses.
4. Remember why it’s important.
At the end of the day, remind yourself why you started your degree in the first place. Whether it was for a career advancement or change, to better yourself for your family, or just to prove that you can do it, it’s worth it.
