Psychology student Amanda York '21 was one of the three finalists in our 2019 Thankful Essay Contest. Here's how she answered the question, "Who has influenced your education/career?" Congratulations, Amanda!
We are all influenced by things and people around us on a daily basis and to be influenced implies that a force has effects on one’s actions and behavior. Those influences help support us in the choices we choose to make in our life. In 2017, my educational goals came to a sudden halt when I fell ill with my Crohn’s Disease. Over the next year and a half, I was in an out of the hospital with what seemed to be no light at the end of the tunnel. All the things I had hoped to accomplish to seemed to be getting further and further away. Finally, in November 2018, I received a much-needed operation placing me back on the road to recovery. During that time, I decided to attempt to return to school and, unfortunately, my previous school was not willing to work with me due to financial issues that were a result of my illness. I tried requesting that other schools work with me in order to continue my education, and, to my avail, I was unsuccessful. Surprisingly, Johnson & Wales University reached out to me encouraging me to continue my education. After explaining my concerns, they were still willing to give me the opportunity to attend their university online. After two years of trying to continue, the hope Johnson & Wales gave me left me feeling elated and like I was given a second chance.
Into my first semester, my health began to become an area of concern, and I underwent another procedure, causing me to fall behind in my courses. I reached out to my instructors at the university, and, to my surprise, I was supported 100 percent by the instructors. They encouraged me to work to catch up with extra time and checked in on me regularly. I felt like despite being faced with difficulty, I could actually do this, and I successfully passed both courses in my first semester. I entered into my second semester with Johnson & Wales, and halfway through the semester, I found myself facing difficulties with my health and felt devastated. I reached out to my instructors and received nothing but understanding and encouragement. It was at this moment I realized that this university cared so much about my success, leaving me feeling beyond encouraged and inspired. The accommodation’s department at the university reached out to me offering even more support, stating they will help in whatever way I needed to be successful at passing my courses. It took many days of hard work and keeping in communication with the university, and I am proud to say I am currently up to date, heading towards successfully passing my courses.
My university’s support is what has brought me to being successful in my education thus far. Universities across the country should take notes from my university on what support truly means. It is because of Johnson & Wales University's staff that I choose to continue pushing forward regardless of my pitfalls. They have influenced my actions towards continuing my education, because I know with them behind me I can do anything!
