Last week, one of our online nonprofit management faculty members who blogs frequently for Career Catalyst, Tom Eskey, mentioned in an email that the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats were playing the University of Georgia Ice Dawgs in ice hockey in his hometown of Athens, Georgia. He was “really surprised” at the matchup but jumped at the chance to root for his team — although, truth be told, he is a UGA grad in addition to a JWU professor and joked, “Should I go ‘person divided’ with the JWU shirt and UGA hat?” Allegiances run deep in the South, but there was no hat (at least not in the photo he shared!).
Our conversation brought to light how important school spirit is to the college experience, and there’s no reason why online students shouldn’t get involved as well!
Here are three ways that JWU Online students can cheer on the Wildcats.
Attend a Home Game
Many JWU Online students live in close proximity to one of the university’s four physical campuses: Providence, Charlotte, North Miami, and Denver. For example, students who live near the Providence Campus can choose from 25 different men’s and women’s sports teams, including basketball, wrestling, soccer, and field hockey (similar to ice hockey, minus the ice). Attend an Away Game
Like Professor Eskey, you may be hundreds of miles away from the nearest campus. However, again like Professor Eskey, you may be pleasantly surprised that the JWU Wildcats are playing at a university near you! Check the away schedules of your nearest campus, and even follow JWU Athletics on social media; several campuses and individual teams have dedicated athletic Facebook pages and/or Twitter and Instagram accounts.
Did you know that JWU livestreams games? If you can’t go to the action, let the action come to you! You can find information on live and recorded games by visiting the main JWU Athletics page, selecting a campus, then clicking on the Live Game button on the right-hand side.
No matter where or how you are learn, you can show your JWU school spirit and pride. Wildcats, roar!
