What’s the biggest skills gap for present-day advertising and marketing professionals? According to Johnson & Wales advertising and marketing communications professor Oscar Chilabato, it is digital marketing.

“The number one void for companies right now, in terms of their marketing and communications departments’ efforts, has been in the digital space,” he said. “Most companies, I would say probably one-third of all companies, are understaffed and underserviced in that space.”

Chilabato says the problem lies in the fact that many advertising professionals are not entering the workplace equipped with skills necessary to manage digital marketing and social media tasks. The JWU advertising programs, however, are making digital a priority in both the online and on-campus programs. Through working with industry professionals to develop the curriculum, JWU is specifically tying the program outcomes to jobs in demand right now.

“We’ve been very good at mapping back jobs to outcomes to courses,” he said.
