Why would someone pursue a graduate degree in Sport Leadership?
According to the experts at Johnson & Wales University, the sports industry is a trillion-dollar industry that just continues to grow—and a sports leadership degree at the masters-level can set a student up for a variety of careers, from coaching to administration to management.
At JWU College of Online Education, we offer both an MS – Sport Leadership and an MBA – Sport Leadership. According to Professor Patrick Leary, EdD, the coursework in each program will expose students to the types of skills—both on the leadership and business fronts— they will need to be successful in the industry.
“We want to ensure that our leaders have the ethics, integrity, and knowledge to be able to advance in an organization, a league, or a department.”
So, which degree should you pursue—MBA or MS? According to Leary, the MBA explores the world of sports with a strict business focus. Students in this program could go on to work in positions within the revenue-generating components of the industry, including venue management, ticketing, data analytics, and ancillary services.
On the other hand, the MS degree introduces a student to and helps develop those crucial leadership competencies they might need in an administration role or coaching position. In this program, students will study effective leadership, communications, and global issues in sport leadership.
