Obtaining grants is a great way to help make tuition more affordable because, unlike loans, they don’t have to be repaid. Whether you’re applying for a federal, state or private grant, our financial advisors can provide support and answer any questions you have.
To see if you’re eligible for federal grants for college, the first thing you’ll need to do is fill out your FAFSA. We’ll be happy to walk you through it step by step if you need any help.
What kinds of federal grants are available?
Federal Pell Grants
These are given to undergraduate students who have not yet earned a bachelor's or graduate degree. For 2016-17, the maximum amount given is $5,815 for full-time students; $4,361 for students who attend three-quarter time.
State and Private Grants
State and private grants frequently have their own applications and deadlines. They can also be a little trickier to track down and apply for, which is why your JWU advisor can help you find outside grants from state and private sources like:
- Your employer
- Corporate or private organizations
- Your state’s higher education agency
- Civic groups/clubs: Lions Club, Rotary Club, Elks Club
- State and local government/agencies
Participating in an Employer Reimbursement program is another way to help pay for your tuition. At Johnson & Wales University, we try to support as many of these programs as we can to make sure the total amount you pay is as low as possible.
How does employer reimbursement work?
- Your employer is responsible for paying a specified percentage of your tuition
- You are responsible for the balance after reimbursement
- The program must be renewed prior to the start of each academic year
How do I apply for an employer reimbursement program?
The first thing you’ll need to do is contact your employer’s human resources department to determine your eligibility for any programs your employer offers. After that, simply complete the reimbursement form and submit it to our financial aid department.
