There's a small window on weekdays between when the key unlocks the front door, the book bag hits the floor, dinner lands on the table, and heads lay down for the night. It's in this sliver of time as the sun begins to sink that notebooks open and computer screens glow. Dwede Dennis ’12, ’18 MBA – Human Resource Management, knows this time well, as it's when she often helps her young daughter with her second grade homework.
A single mother who works full-time, Dwede values time management almost as much as she values education. You see, Dwede has spent most Saturdays over the past few years pursuing her master's degree in human resources from Johnson & Wales University. The flexibility of the online option allowed her to achieve her goal and graduate this past May in Providence.
Now that she has her master’s degree, Dwede hopes to pursue her doctorate and work in human resource management.
Here is her success story, in her own words.
Looking back, why did you choose JWU Online for your degree?
I graduated with my undergraduate degree from JWU. I also chose it for my master’s program because it was a reputable college and the online format seemed like a convenient tool to use. I work full-time and online courses were the only way I would be able to finish up in a reasonable amount of time and gain the skills I needed to succeed in the business world.
What kind of student would you say you were?
I would describe myself as a persistent and determined student. I like to do things in a timely manner and make sure everything is correct. I also find it to be very rewarding when I achieve the goals I set for myself.
When you think of all the hard work you put in, sacrifices big and small, how does it feel to reach this commencement milestone?
I feel very accomplished to have achieved this milestone in my life. It took a lot of work, but I am grateful that I made this sacrifice for my daughter and me. It makes me proud to know that she will have someone to look up to.
