Military and Veteran Students
Our Roots Support Your Branches
If you’re looking for an institution that has a legacy of providing high-quality, career-relevant education to service members and their families, look no further than Johnson & Wales University.
Johnson & Wales University was founded by Gertrude Johnson and Mary Wales in 1914 on the cusp of World War I in Europe. Three years later when the U.S. entered the war, they educated women who filled the vacated positions of men serving abroad. When the war ended, they provided returning veterans with job training that helped them acclimate back to civilian life.
When the two founders retired in 1947, they passed the torch to two Navy veterans who met while deployed. Edward Triangolo and Morris J.W. Gaebe grew the school with the influx of GIs seeking job skills during the post-World-War-II years.
Our founders not only understood the importance of a professionally-focused education in preparing graduates, but they also spoke with employers to discover their needs, as well as with students to uncover their career aspirations. They created individual curriculum roadmaps for students to achieve their goals, and then worked to place them in companies that were a right fit. The combination of industry-focused curriculum and connecting students to employment opportunities established an institutional DNA that is still thriving today.
