What do you like most about teaching online?
I enjoy the diversity in the student population. Not just the ethnic diversity but also the “Stage of Life” diversity. I am able to teach and learn with students from 18 to 60 years old and all the life experiences that brings with it.
How do you bring the industry to life in class?
I have more than 14 years of experience in law enforcement and over 10 years of experience as a professor. This is a unique combination that our field, Criminal Justice, rarely sees. I have the practitioner’s experience coupled with the academic perspective that results in learning and discussion applicable in both areas. I am neither a pure theorist nor a pure layman — I am a hybrid, as such I believe I have a valuable perspective to the discipline.
Do you have any career advice for prospective students?
I always tell my students that they should first pick their college degree based upon their goals for employment. They should investigate their career choice and choose the degree that the career calls for. After that, pick something you are interested in. You are more likely to stick with and complete a degree you find intriguing.
