Meet JWU professor Patrick Leary, EdD: Learn how he translates his classroom courses in Providence to the online classroom—plus discover the advice that he credits both his work ethic and success.

How long have you been at Johnson & Wales University, and what was your industry experience before you began teaching?
I have been with JWU for nine years and have enjoyed every moment of my experience. Prior to joining Johnson & Wales, I worked in sports marketing with Boston College Athletics and Providence College Athletics. I also worked in brand management for Sports Action Brands, including NERF, at Hasbro, Inc.

What advice do you give students who are majoring in the sports/event/entertainment management field?
Keep an open mind and be an explorer, the SEEM industry has tremendous depth and breadth. Learning by doing will help you hone your career focus. Experiential learning through way of volunteerism and internships will help you refine your long-term career perspective.

What the best career advice you’ve ever gotten?
My father would often tell me “winners make it happen, losers let it happen.” That quote resonated with me because, as someone who grew up constantly competing in sports, I knew winning came as result of hard work, self-discipline, and an unwavering commitment to the end goal. I believe I have been able to apply this mentality to my professional career.

How does your approach toward teaching in a traditional classroom differ from teaching in an online classroom?
I believe my approach to the traditional classroom is very similar to my approach to an online classroom. Regardless of the modality, I strive to give maximum effort when teaching a class to optimize experiential learning opportunities. When teaching online I believe it’s important to create a collaborative learning environment through peer engagement. Additionally, I tend to develop assignments that promote student engagement with industry. The ultimate goal is to develop a professional network and promote a communal learning platform.

How does your approach toward teaching in a traditional classroom differ from teaching in an online classroom?
I was a history major at Providence College and once upon a time envisioned myself as a high school history teacher. I love learning about how the past has shaped our present day. When I’m not teaching I’m typically at the gym training for a marathon or exploring the world with my five-year-old son.
