During Johnson & Wales University’s 43rd Annual Career Expo and Internship Fair, we asked top employers a few questions about their hiring processes and what types of candidates they are searching for. Here is what they had to say:

What type of attributes are you looking for in a résumé?

“Longevity and leadership experience.” — Target

“We’re looking for people who are adaptable. You need to have a good personality, too. Eye contact and a strong handshake are crucial.” — EcoLab

“We want volunteer experience because immersing ourselves in the local community is a big part of our company.” — Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island

“Any type of industry experience is always good to see on a résumé.” — Sodexo

“We really gravitate toward people who have radio and television experience. Also people who have completed volunteer work.” — ESPN

“Internship experience.” — Ocean State Job Lot

“We’re looking for specific experience, either in culinary or back-of-the-house.” — Wegmans

What does the ideal candidate look like to you?

“Someone who isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty and put in the work. Working here is essentially like running your own business.” — Sherwin Williams

“We look for people who are passionate about the environment and motivated to make a difference.” — Clean Water Action

“BCBSRI is always looking for local talent. Personally, I want someone who can put their phone down, look me in the eye, and have a conversation.”— Blue Cross Blue Shield of RI

“Most of our positions are entry-level. We’re really just looking for someone with the right attitude. We can teach skills but attitude is the key.” — National Hotel

“We’re looking for a foundational values match… someone with a good personality.” — Wegmans

What is the best piece of career advice you could give to a future employee?

“Stay patient.” — EcoLab

“Go above and beyond, and get as much experience as you can.” —ESPN

“Be yourself but don’t be afraid to get your feet wet.” — Ocean State Job Lot

“I want a candidate to know what they want [out of a position] and do the appropriate research. I don’t want to have to explain the basics of the company to them.” — Target
