What do you like most about teaching online?
I love leveraging the ever-evolving technologies to bridge the physical-virtual gap that most new (and some existing) online students yearn for.
What strategies do you use to keep students engaged?
I use personalized and encouraging feedback. Even students who are struggling need that emphatic and positive nudge in the right direction. This allows everyone the chance to smile while they are learning and may even provide that incentive to go the extra mile. I also use Zoom and screen-cast-omatic to employ a synchronous feel.
How do you bring the industry to life in class?
I require the purchase of the Wall Street Journal (only $10 for 10 weeks) and have article discussions that are relevant to the current topic. It is amazing how well this has lined up with the course material. This is usually met with some resistance at the onset, but most everyone has agreed that it is the most interesting and engaging part of the course.
Do you have any advice for prospective students?
Be open minded … online learning is not a natural fit for everyone, but that does not mean you cannot learn to be an online learner. Use your instructor, peers and other resources to get the most out of your education. Smile!
