What do you like most about teaching online?
My dad has been teaching online since 2001 so it has been the “family business” since I was in high school! I have always been intrigued by the concept of interacting with students and faculty from anywhere in the world and by being exposed to extremely unique and positive viewpoints that such diversity allows to flourish. As a former online learner, I feel especially connected to my students.
How do you bring the industry to life in class?
I do my best to keep myself informed of the current popular trends in my field and to incorporate them, whether in the form of related discussions or in the form of relevant projects or exercises, in a manner that will benefit students in their professional and even in the personal endeavors. I’m not afraid to share stories about my professional “goofs” in order to help guide students…while also lightening the mood and sharing some laughs!
Do you have any career advice for prospective students?
Do you want to work in a particular job in your area? There is likely someone in your class who you can connect with. Do you want to work in a particular job five states away? Five countries away? There is likely someone in your class who you can connect with. Online students have the unique ability to make a vast array of professional connections from around the globe. Reach out to classmates outside of the “classroom” and interact with them via quality discussion postings (your online instructors will especially appreciate the second part!) You never know when a job or another professional opportunity will be offered to you or when you may make a lifelong friend.
